The most common challenge couples typically identify within their marriage is the need for “better communication.” Interestingly, what we often discover is couples are talking to each other, sometimes to exhaustion, so the problem isn’t a lack of words or an understanding of these words. What’s really happening on a deeper level and what’s really taking place in the relationship is the growing distance being created by repeated and unrepaired emotional disconnections. Experiencing these disconnections from the very one we’re counting on to be there with us and for us not only blocks intimacy, it threatens our sense of marriage as a safe-haven relationship. What each partner really wants to know and feel is “you are there for…and…with me!”
