How Community Groups Work

Q: What exactly is a community group (CG)?

Community groups are the heartbeat of our church and serve as the primary setting for members to live out the values of worship, community, growth, service and generosity. A community group is 12-16 adults who are encouraging one another to mature in the faith and give their lives away. In community groups we experience care and accountability in the context of authentic relationships.

Q: Is it like a small group Bible study?

Yes and no. Members do meet and work through a biblically-based curriculum, however, we go beyond a “Bible-study” format. In CGs we are learning how to relate and live life biblically. That means really getting to know and be known by others.

Q: So, what happens at a typical meeting?

Most meetings last around two hours. During that time a group will eat some snacks, work through their curriculum, share what is going on in their lives, pray and encourage one another wherever they are in their journey of faith. At other times, groups meet to serve or meet the needs of others outside the group. Most groups rotate meeting in each other’s homes.

Q: How often do groups meet?

Groups meet at least twice a month (Sept. – May) but are encouraged to meet three times per month; twice around a set curriculum and once for an all-family social or ministry outreach.

Q: Who leads the group?

Each group has a community group leader who serves essentially as a lay pastor. Many groups also have a co-leader. Leaders must complete our Leadership Development training and have participated in a community group before they’re assigned a group. A community group pastor meets with each community group leader monthly for the purpose of encouraging and equipping them in the leadership role they have in this body.

Q: How are groups put together?

We look first at geography and attempt to match you with others in your area. Other variables that we consider are the night of the week that works best for you, your season of life, a particular curriculum interest or a special ministry cause in which you may be involved. While we often can’t accommodate every desire, we try hard to find the best fit for you.

Q: Are children involved in community groups?

Because our desire for adults to truly engage in each others lives, children generally do not attend community group with their parents. Many couples work out childcare with others in the church who have their community group meeting on a different night.

Q: How long do groups stay together?

Most groups stay together 2-3 years. However there is no “hard rule” for how long a group is together. Sometimes people change groups due to a family relocation or work schedule change. We also ask members to do an annual evaluation (check-up) to let us know how their group is doing.

Q: How do I get involved in a community group?

Once you have completed the Discovery process, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a community group.
